“It was lonely and burdensome to be named Fabiola in 1970s Miami. Teachers stumbled every morning when they came to my name during roll call. Friends nicknamed me after a detergent, and I, a Cuban child with the wounds of loss and exile still fresh, didn’t get the joke.

Although I’m alone this misty morning in a dimly lit, mahogany-paneled wing of the Hispanic Society of America, I am anything but lonely surrounded by 286 images of a woman named Fabiola, the original Fabiola.”*
