Azteca América announced today the premiere of Retador Azteca (Azteca Challenger) Presented by Budweiser, on Sunday, January 20th at 8 PM/7 C. The new boxing reality show pits eight Mexican contenders against eight Americans in a duel of honor leading up to the final bout at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser will air nationally Sundays at 8 PM/7 C and will be hosted by native Mexican and two-time WBC Super Flyweight Champion, Jorge “El Travieso” Arce, one of the most recognized names in boxing.
The producers of Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser searched near and far for the best undiscovered boxing talent in Mexico City and across the U.S., including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami and San Juan (Puerto Rico). Separated from their families for eighteen weeks, the boxers live in “reality houses,” with the Mexican team in Puebla and the Americans in Las Vegas. The show takes an inside look at each contender’s personal story and what motivates him to fight for victory– overcoming a life of poverty, a promise to a deceased parent, a better education for his children.
The unique twist in this series is fun, yet intense, rivalry between the Mexican and U.S. boxers as they compete simultaneously in each country. For die-hard fight fans this equals action times two — double the suspense, the punches, the sweat and the tears. In the final bout airing Sunday, May 18, 2008, the finalist from each country will face-off, glove-to-glove at the world-famous Caesars Palace to battle for the grand prize of $50,000 and a leg-up in the fiercely competitive boxing industry. The second place will win a prize of $10,000.
“We are delighted to debut Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser, a show that will offer our viewers all the excitement and passion that Latinos feel for boxing,” said Harry Abraham, Vice President of Programming and Production for Azteca América. “Our network is delivering top-of-the-line programming conceptualized and made by U.S. Latino producers specifically for U.S. Spanish-language media audiences.”
Boxers will be pushed beyond their physical limits by Jorge “El Travieso” Arce and his team of trainers, while counselors will work to keep them mentally and psychologically focused. At the end of each episode, viewers will be able to vote for their favorite “Retador” online or via text message. A true test of speed, endurance and mental fortitude, Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser, is sure to keep viewers ringside.
Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser is a co-production of Azteca América and Mapitv Entertainment Group. Mapi Montero is the owner of Mapitv Entertainment Group and the creator, executive producer and director of the show. A native of Chile, she has the distinction of being the only woman in the U.S. who is a licensed boxing promoter.
