“This season’s addition of the twins Maya and Alejandro Herrera to the already-sprawling cast of the blockbuster NBC series Heroes is only the latest addition of Hispanic characters to already-existing prime time network shows. Not to be outdone, CBS premiered the nighttime soap Cane featuring a majority Latino cast.

The additions come as another step forward in closing the gap between Hispanic representation on prime time and their importance to the real-world American economy. Already the largest minority group and constituting a consumer power valued at more than $700 billion dollars, Hispanics nevertheless remain vastly underrepresented on most network shows. While studies show the number of Hispanic characters overall is rising, so far they have yet to reflect the Latino community’s 13% share of the American .”*
