Actress hits big-screen stride in 40s - Spain’s Belén Rueda defies American studios’ age bias

In America, a 40-ish former model and game show host who settles into a long-running TV series can expect she’ll be typecast for years, end up on a reality show, then float into oblivion.

But in Spain, she can be Belén Rueda.

The actress, whose name is pronounced Bay-LEN Rue-EH-dah, won a Goya Award (Spain’s Oscar) in 2005 a few weeks short of 40. She was best new actress in “The Sea Inside,” playing an attorney who tries to win a long-paralyzed fisherman the legal right to take his own life.”*
