Over the last 10 years, it is well known that Hispanic labor has become prevalent in all facets of the Wisconsin labor force. This is also true in the dairy industry, even in Fond du Lac County.
In an employee survey that I headed up this past summer for UW Extension, we interviewed more than 300 dairy farm employees on 34 farms located in Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties. More than 70 percent of the employees were of Hispanic origin.
Immigration has become a very contentious issue in the political scene. Hispanic labor has become a target for various groups. Most people realize that there is a lot of manual labor that is being done by Hispanics here in Wisconsin. This includes the hotel, restaurant, roofing, landscaping and agricultural industries.”*
