Knowledge is Power!
The Austin School District’s Second Annual All-City Mariachi Festival is scheduled for Saturday, January 26, at the Mexican American Cultural Center, located at 600 River Street at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is free.
The concert, sponsored by AISD’s Fine Arts Office, will include performances by mariachi groups from middle and high schools throughout the District. Former State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos will be the master-of-ceremonies.
Scheduled to participate are:
Mariachi del Sur, Bedichek Middle School
Mariachi Juventud, Covington Middle School
Mariachi, Fulmore Middle School
Mariachi Darado, Paredes Middle School
Mariachi los Toritos, Mendez Middle School
Rebeldes del Sur, Travis High School
Mariachi de Oro, Crockett High School
In 2008-2009, AISD mariachi groups, as well as those from other Texas school districts, will have an opportunity to participate in UIL competition as a separate and independent category of Medium Ensemble Competition. In prior years, Mariachi groups participated in UIL events in the category of Experimental Ensemble Competition, which included a variety of other musical groups and genres.
The AISD Mariachi Program began in 1979 at Fulmore Middle School. It was founded by Zeke Castro.
