What do Americans mean when they say they want border security? As mayor of McAllen, Texas, I’ve had an opportunity to hear from many people on this issue. I hear Americans say they want our government to keep terrorists and drugs out of the country.
At the same time, Americans say they want to ensure that border security does not impede important trade flowing back and forth between the United States and Mexico.
Last month, residents of the Rio Grande Valley turned out by the thousands to protest a plan by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Army Corps of Engineers to build 21 segments of fencing along 70 miles of border between Rio Grande City and Brownsville. These Americans say, “Don’t fence U.S. in.”"*
