Latin choral group mirrors San Francisco community

It’s a cold December evening, but inside the auditorium of San Francisco’s Mission Dolores School, the warm, sweet sounds of Cuba are in the air.
Juan Pedro Gaffney, the bespectacled, pony-tailed director of Coro Hispano de San Francisco, is listening intently. Nearly a dozen members of the Hispanic early music chorus he founded in 1975 are singing a few bars from the refrain of a contemporary carol by Cuban-American composer Roger Hernandez.
“Let the wind hit your bones!” Gaffney cries out as the choir pauses. “One more time! From the gut!” Comprised of professional singers and talented amateurs, the community choir has just begun rehearsals for its 21st annual Dia de los Reyes concert series honoring the Feast of the Epiphany and surrounding days.”*
