“Surprisingly, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., did not take advantage of the situation to gain more support among the Hispanic voters viewing the first, ever Spanish language debate among Republican president candidates on Univision Sunday. Univision held a similar debate for Democratic presidential hopefuls three months earlier.

Among Hispanic voters, where immigration is such a huge topic, McCain should have come out miles ahead of his rivals. He was the only one of them who supported a failed immigration reform bill in Congress this year — he was one of the original co-sponsors of the Senate version with Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass.. McCain still supports an immigration reform bill, but he is now much more careful in using words like amnesty, or legalization.”*
