Zumba Seizes Favor at West Virginia University

Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance, has recently become popular on West Virginia University’s campus. According to instructor Summer Shelton, Zumba was founded in the mid 1990’s by a celebrity fitness trainer from Colombia named Beto Perez.
“One day [Perez] was teaching a class and he forgot his routine music,” said Shelton. “So he had to improvise and just used some of his own music, and Zumba was created.” The tapes Perez used to teach his class that day were composed of traditional Latin salsa and merengue music.
