Jesus Chairez of Dallas: A place for us – Latino art space Estrada Studio relocates, but continues mission, says JESUS CHAIREZ of Dallas

“As an Old East Dallas resident, I like living a short distance to our Arts District. Almost daily I pass the district and see the transformation of the area to a world-class arts and entertainment district. But I am also saddened with the progress.

Saddened because Estrada Studio, a small alternative Latino art space that was located on the corner of Ross Avenue and Routh Street for 24 years, is gone. It is a casualty to the modernization of the Arts District.

Estrada Studio was Dallas’ first space to showcase local Latino artists in the Arts District. The building where the studio was located looked more barn than art gallery. Every time I passed Estrada Studio in the mid-1980s, I thought of stopping to explore the inside of the gallery/studio and ask if they would show my art photographs of Mexico City street scenes.”*
