When you check the list of nominees for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, to be given out on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles, don’t be surprised to see more Latino hip hop acts than last year.
It’s because they have their own category — Best Urban Album — as opposed to the last year’s genre-blender Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album award — won by Maná.
“Last year’s category was a little strange,” said René (Residente) Pérez, Calle 13’s lead singer, who was nominated both years, and welcomes the urban-only category.
“They may have seen that something’s cooking in [the Latin Urban movement].””*
