Prof. Gordon has spent 20 years working on immigration problems. She won her grant after organizing the Workplace Project, a program that helped Latino immigrants on Long Island organize and then recover withheld or stolen wages. Her work emboldened laborers around the country to stand up against underpaying and abusive employers.
But $500,000 MacArthur Awards are not given for past accomplishments; they go to people with the potential to create something new — a thing, an idea a concept — whatever.
