Glenda Gomez glanced at her note-filled spiral binder, then at the instructor, before greeting a newcomer to her English class.

“Hi, my name is Glenda. I am from El Salvador. Welcome to the class.”

That simple salutation in an intermediate class represents vast success for Gomez, who in five years has gone from scouting menial work opportunities in her homeland to embarking on a promising future in South Florida. She left El Salvador in 2002, inspired by a desire to learn English and search for a better life. Her commitment is wholehearted, she says.”*
