El Hispano News’ “Parents Step Ahead” is proud to announce that Brigadier General Angela Salinas, commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region, will be the keynote speaker for the 2007 El Hispano News’ “Parents Step Ahead” Parent of the Year award ceremony dinner on Dec. 6 at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel. Six parents from the Dallas, Fort Worth and Garland school districts will be recognized with an award and grand prize package including a home computer system, for their efforts and commitment to the education of their children. Dr. James Davis, Secretary’s Regional Representative, U.S. Department of Education will be a featured speaker with Robert Bard, CEO and President of Latina Style Magazine serving as emcee.
“We are honored to have Brig. Gen. Salinas be our keynote speaker. Her extensive military career and personal achievements, becoming the first woman to hold several positions within the Marine Corp serves as a role model for all of our youth, especially within the Hispanic community,” said Lupita Colmenero, founder of “Parents Step Ahead” and co-publisher of El Hispano News. The Parent of the Year award recipients will be chosen by a Steering Committee composed of educators, corporate sponsors and community leaders. A selection criterion is based on program participation and the submission of an essay by parents on the importance of parental involvement in the education of their children. “To have the opportunity to speak at an event where parents are being recognized for their involvement with their children is an honor,” said Brig. Gen. Salinas. “Awarding parents for the positive influence they have on their children is important. We are letting parents know that they are not alone, we are all one community.”
The program consists of several school events within the Dallas, Fort Worth and Garland districts. Each half day school event is completely free of charge and includes breakfast and childcare. Parents participate in classroom discussions ranging in topics from internet safety and the dangers of online child predators, developing test taking skills, parenting with love and logic, understanding the influence of gangs and drugs on children and underage drinking, financial literacy, domestic violence, obtaining higher education among others.
