Gov. Blunt proposes ban on driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants – Missouri

This isn’t a good idea. Why? It is already hard enough to get a driver’s license in MO and if someone is in the country ‘illegally’ why would you need another law to deal with them. Are you going to fine them or imprison them? How much will it cost the taxpayer (and that probably includes most of those very people targeted by this proposed law)? All this Shows Me is that Blunt is bucking for the anti-immigrant vote. Doesn’t seem very sharp, does it? Plus, look at how things are progressing in Oklahoma with it’s new law.

Gov. Matt Blunt announced another piece to his crackdown on illegal immigration today: a legislative proposal that would bar Missouri from issuing driver’s licenses to people who are in the state illegally.

The state already has safeguards intended to prevent illegal immigrants from getting driver’s licenses, but Missouri lacks a specific law against it, Blunt said.

“This would clarify in law that the state of Missouri will not issue a driver’s license to an illegal immigrant,” Blunt said Monday during a news conference at the Kansas City Police Department. “And it would create penalties that do not exist today for those who attempt to help an illegal obtain a driver’s license.”"*
