“Western North Carolina employers and Latino advocates have qualms about U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler’s immigration reform legislation, reflecting what some say are obstacles to the bill’s passage.

The plan would beef up security while requiring employers to use a federal database to verify that their workers are in the U.S. legally.

Shuler, D-Waynesville, said the plan has broad support, citing backing from business interests and 112 House co-sponsors, both Republican and Democrat. He said he hopes to bring the legislation up for a vote early next year. The bill was introduced in the Senate Nov. 15 and in the House Nov. 6.”*
