Real Estate, Housing slump hits Hispanics in Census Tract 504 hard – Florida

“
The 2000 census counted 6,333 residents in tract 504, about a third of them — 2,363 people — Hispanic, along with 4,935 whites. In 1990, just 4,202 residents were found within the tract’s borders, which stretch from near I-75 and U.S. 41 on the east and west. The Imperial River forms the southern boundary, while Shangrila Road and Imperial Harbor Boulevard makes up the northern border.

It is a place of sharp contrasts, of upscale homes and low income rental units, where the old Bonita butts up against glistening new development.

Pineda, 37, said the size of the area’s Mexican population was the primary reason he and his brother Francisco chose Bonita as the location for El Forastero, when they opened the doors seven years ago.”*
