The 2000 census counted 6,333 residents in tract 504, about a third of them — 2,363 people — Hispanic, along with 4,935 whites. In 1990, just 4,202 residents were found within the tract’s borders, which stretch from near I-75 and U.S. 41 on the east and west. The Imperial River forms the southern boundary, while Shangrila Road and Imperial Harbor Boulevard makes up the northern .

It is a place of sharp contrasts, of upscale homes and low income rental units, where the old Bonita butts up against glistening new development.
