“The Florida State Fair Authority (FSFA) will unveil the new LA PLAZA Hispanic Village at the 2008 Florida State Fair on February 7-18, 2008. The Fair’s LA PLAZA Hispanic Village will offer authentic food from various Hispanic countries, shopping, live entertainment, and other cultural activities representing the Latino community. It will be located near lakeside on the south end of the Fairgrounds by the giant slide and across the street from the stage where Spanish Lyric Theatre performs during the Fair.

The idea for this new area sprung to life after FSFA consulted with several leaders in the Hispanic community including Patrick Manteiga of the La Gaceta newspaper, Rene Gonzalez of Spanish Lyric Theatre, and Lily Gonzalez of WVEA-TV Univision. From these discussions, it was determined there was a need to broaden the diversity of food, products and entertainment at the Florida State Fair to represent the largest ethnic population in the country. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 43 million Hispanics living in the U.S.A. In Florida alone, 19.5% of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin. The term ‘Hispanic’ refers to people whose origin is Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Spanish speaking Central or South American countries, or other Hispanic/Latino, regardless of race. The FSFA has partnered with Nuevo Advertising Group, a Hispanic advertising and marketing firm, to create a targeted Hispanic marketing campaign to build brand awareness and recognition for the Fair’s LA PLAZA Hispanic Village.

“We realize there is a huge segment of our audience that enjoys Hispanic food and entertainment. This new area will enhance the Fair experience and bring awareness of Spanish culture to nearly 500,000 people that visit the state fair each year,” remarks Charles Pesano, executive director of the Florida State Fair Authority. “Our intention is to grow this area over the next few years into an international market place where people can enjoy a diversity of food and entertainment from other cultures,” added Pesano.

The Florida State Fair is now accepting space applications for food vendors and exhibitors who want to participate in the LA PLAZA Hispanic Village. Space is limited and applications are due by December 3, 2007! Applications can be obtained by calling 813-627-4314 or e-mail shreavd@doacs.state.fl.us . Spaces are available in 10’x10’ foot sections or larger with a depth limit of 20 foot per space. The cost for space is $160 per front foot for food vendors and $140 per front foot for commercial exhibitors. For example, a 10’x10’ food vendor space would cost $1,600 and a 10’x10’ commercial exhibit space would cost $1,400 for all 12 days of the Fair. Electrical hook-up and garbage disposal are additional fees. Corporate sponsorships are also available for companies that prefer greater marketing exposure.

Additionally, the Florida State Fair is looking for Hispanic entertainers, musicians, dancers and local community groups to perform at the LA PLAZA Hispanic Village. Those interested should send a performance video or music CD with contact information for booking purposes to the Florida State Fair, Attention: Denise Shreaves, P.O. Box 11766, Tampa, FL 33680. For more information, call 813-627-4314 or e-mail shreavd@doacs.state.fl.us .
