In Peru, Gustavo Chavez worked as a radio journalist for eight years, interviewing eminent politicians and celebrities.
But threats against Chavez from Peruvian Maoist rebels forced him to leave the country and seek asylum in the United States.
When he arrived in 1994, Chavez could not find a job working in radio. Instead, he cleaned medical offices for five years. In 1999, he met the publisher of a Spanish weekly newspaper who helped him ease his way back into journalism.”*
