When he was a boy, the sharp thwack of a ruler came crashing down on the back of Leonard Davila’s hand, his swift, jarring punishment for uttering words in Spanish at school. When he was a teenager, he suffered the sting of something worse.
As he stood in a long line to get inside the Paramount Theatre, a white teen cut in front of Davila, who protested. The boy responded with the slur many Hispanics consider the most offensive of all: “Wetbacks in back of the line.”"*
