Hofstra debate reflects Long Island torn on immigration

Advocates and critics of undocumented immigrants faced off at the Hofstra Law School Friday in a debate that echoed the conflicting opinions across Long Island about immigration.
While the supporters said that the estimated 50,000 undocumented workers on Long Island boost the economy and take jobs that others refuse, the critics asserted that they clog roads with traffic and bring down property values by crowding into houses.
“We can’t solve the world’s poverty problem by allowing a few million people to come into this country illegally so they can be exploited,” said Michael Cutler, of Brooklyn, who spent more than 30 years as a federal immigration agen”*
