“Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who needs to shore up support among Latino lawmakers after his shift on the driver’s license issue, appeared at the Somos el Futuro conference this morning — an annual gathering of the state’s Assembly’s /Hispanic Task Force in San Juan, P.R.

The license issue has certainly led to tensions among Latino lawmakers, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver also reiterated his opposition to the latest plan this morning. But the event lacked rancor. The governor appeared at a breakfast, spoke for perhaps 20 to 30 minutes to a private gathering of lawmakers. Judging from the four rounds of applause, it sounded friendly enough, and the governor sidestepped confrontation by not engaging in a question and answer session with the lawmakers, though he did take some questions from the press afterwards.”*
