Knowledge is Power!

“As the candidates for the local elections have jockeyed for position, one of the major issues that has come to light has been the economic development (or lack thereof) in the area.

In order to win votes, candidates have posited a number of solutions, from growing the tax base to zoning for big-box stores. But one possible solution has been overlooked: encouraging Hispanic immigrants to settle in the area.

At first this might not seem like a realistic solution. After all, most economic development tools focus on making it easier for owners to start businesses. This usually means relaxing restrictions on businesses (or at least clarifying them) and helping entrepreneurs reduce startup costs through programs like Carrboro’s Rotating Loan Fund.”*
