“The United States has vast resources directed at tracking conditions around the country, from the flow of streams to the vagaries of weather, but often it’s hard to find what you need when you need it.

Now, for drought at least, there’s a single go-to place, at www.drought.gov. Maps show how bad (or good) things are in particular places, with the ability to zoom in on your region for a closer look. They also show forecasts.

One thing you see clearly in these maps is the enormous range of variation around the continent. Media coverage allows us all to experience California wildfires or see Georgia’s shrinking reservoirs. But watching a fire on TV is a very different experience from fleeing one raging up the hill.”*
