Want to irritate a PR flack? Bring up immigration and the Hispanic work force

If you think the immigration issue isn’t a sensitive matter, just try broaching the subject with a spokesperson for a large construction company.
Last week, I covered the “topping off” ceremony of Mission Hospitals’ new Dogwood Building, an $80 million structure on the Mission campus.
Whenever I go to construction sites, I can’t help but notice most of the workers are Hispanic, and this was certainly the case at the Dogwood Building, which the North Carolina office of Bovis Lend Lease Inc. is building.
Out of a hundred or so steelworkers and construction workers (Bovis employees and subcontractors), I spotted maybe five non-Hispanic workers. Now before you run off calling me a racist, here’s my viewpoint on all this: Wake up America — this is just the way it is and the way it’s going to be.”*
