Spitzer offers 3 license options, wins fed approval for IDs – New York

Gov. Spitzer announced a new plan Saturday to offer three kinds of New York driver’s licenses – a move meant to quell furious criticism of his push to give illegal immigrants licenses, but which sparked sharp objections from friends and rivals.
Spitzer has run into resistance from Republicans, objections from voters and a mutiny by county clerks since he proposed giving undocumented immigrants licenses last month.
Backing away from his vow to give illegal immigrants the same licenses as citizens, Spitzer announced a deal with the Bush administration that creates two licenses that comply with federal security laws – and one both citizens and illegal immigrants can obtain, but can’t use as federal ID.”*
