Romney touts tough immigration stand – GOP caucusgoers want strict laws, candidate says

“Presidential candidate Mitt Romney acknowledged today that his party’s stance on immigration would probably hurt its chances with Latino voters but said Republicans “have to do what’s right” and clamp down on illegal immigration.

“There is potentially some political risk, I think you’re right,” Romney said in response to a question on the political television show, Iowa Press. “But we have to do what’s right for the country.”

The former Massachusetts governor leads polls of Iowa Republican caucusgoers. He said during the half-hour taping that GOP candidates who have “been very strong on illegal immigration” will benefit when Iowans caucus Jan. 3.”*
