Latina ‘Barbies’ make bad role models

“Rosie Molinary was saddened, but not surprised, to learn that Hispanic women have the highest rates of cosmetic surgery of any American minority group.

“I found girls who had nose jobs when they were 15 or 16, sometimes for their quinceaneras,” or 15th birthday celebrations, said the former high school teacher from Charlotte.

To probe the issue, she wrote Hijas Americanas (”American Daughters”), subtitled Beauty, Body Image and Growing Up Latina, published by Seal Press. For her book, she interviewed more than 100 Latina women of various ages and backgrounds and polled more than 500 others on the Internet.”*
