Fuerzabruta – New York

Tagged: , , , , ,

“The front door would have to go. That’s the only way the set for “Fuerzabruta,” the new show from the team behind the long-running “De La Guarda,” would fit into the Daryl Roth Theater.

But as Bradley Thompson, the production’s technical director, soon realized, it wasn’t just a matter of applying a couple of screwdrivers to the door hinges. The steel-and-glass facade would have to be removed too. And because the building, a 19th-century former bank on Union Square East, is landmarked, he would have to get approval from the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission and hire architects and specially licensed contractors. And he would have to do it quickly: the commission had approved a doorless Daryl Roth for only one day, and the set was too big to store. So at 4 a.m. one September morning, Mr. Thompson arrived to oversee a crew of 45. It took them 15 hours to do the load-in.

That was just one of the problems in bringing “Fuerzabruta,” a highly complex show to install, from Argentina, where it originated. Now in previews, it is scheduled to open on Wednesday, with a set that includes two mobile pools, a 6-foot-high treadmill and a 20-foot flying curtain. “*
