Concerns about my ethnicity still mainly personal – Appleton, Wisconsin
Tagged: reporter, WisconsinPosted on: October 22nd, 2007“As a journalist, part of my job takes me to the workings of government bodies inside board rooms and city halls. You would think walking in these places would be second nature to a reporter, except it sometimes isn’t.
Typically, I’m a little hesitant my first time stepping into a room — it goes double for rural communities — where I know I’m clearly in the minority. I’m a Latina.
In the back of my mind, I’m trying to anticipate the response I’ll get. There aren’t a whole lot of us in these parts, and I dread long stares.”*
