“The last time I spoke with Carlos Pesina, I was preparing for ankle surgery with a highly regarded surgeon from Dallas.

As he always did, Carlos regaled me with a wonderful tale of his own health issues, in this case a chronic and painful back problem.

In a way that only he could, Pesina casually dropped the names of the medical elite in this community as friends with whom he consulted to help decide on a course of treatment for his ongoing back problems.

In the end, he said, he decided to use a curandero — a Mexican folk healer.”*
