University of California researcher: farmers markets benefit local economies

“There was a huge rise in farmers markets in the last 40 years and I wanted to find out why,” said Gail Feenstra, with the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP). In 1970 there were only 340 farmers markets in the United States; by 2006, there were more than 4,385 farmers markets, an increase of approximately 1,190 percent.
