Rosie Perez Sparks Slapstick `Ritz’ – NYC

Tagged: , ,

“Back in 1975, Manhattan’s gay baths were in full swing and Terrence McNally’s farce about them, “The Ritz,” was both timely and, like homosexuality in general, a daring topic for Broadway, leading to a modestly successful yearlong run and putting McNally on the map.

Now things are reversed: gay themes thrive on our stages and the baths are a thing of the past. So, too, I’m afraid, is “The Ritz,” which, frankly, wasn’t all that hilarious to begin with. Not even some fireworks from Rosie Perez can make this play seem fresh, let alone funny.”*
