President William Powers visited Mexico three times in the past year to strengthen the relationship between UT and academic and governmental institutions in Mexico. Professors from most colleges within the University teach courses on Mexico, and the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is thought by many to offer the best Mexican studies graduate program in the nation.
An agreement signed last week, which will allow UT to access data from the Mexican Secretariat of Social Development, is expected to broaden the collaboration between both sides. Researchers at UT will use the data to examine the effectiveness of Mexican programs designed to eliminate poverty, and whether or not programs designed for the poor are reaching those in need”*
