“It’s a story Navy sophomore linebacker Ram Vela, a standout quarterback at Taft in 2004, can tell his grandchildren someday.

Although he laughs about it now, Vela was hardly smiling last spring when he was detained at a security checkpoint at the White House before the Midshipmen received the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy from President Bush.

“It was a very scary experience,” said Vela, a 2005 Taft graduate who will start at outside linebacker when Navy plays at Pittsburgh tonight.”
