Knowledge is Power!
“I found part of the answer to my question when I was scanning the comment board of the Washington Post recently. Former NBC producer Cecilia Alvear wrote an opinion piece for the Post noting how “The War” had presented an incomplete picture of Latino contributions to the war.
One of the comments to Alvear’s piece was stunning: “I normally don’t have a problem with inclusion, but I’m not aware of any significant role Latinos played in this war. They were only 1 percent of the population, and left no indelible mark that I’m aware of,” wrote one reader.
No indelible mark? Let me go back to the Smithsonian’s U.S. Latino Patriots” project. I guess the fact that about 500,000 Latinos served in the U.S. armed forces during WWII is not significant enough. Latinos fought in all the theaters of conflict during World War II, they earned 12 Congressional Medals of Honor during this period, and records show the countless heroics of those who served. “
