El Centro de la Raza marks 35 years – Seattle
Tagged: La Raza, protest, Seattle, teacher, WashingtonPosted on: October 9th, 2007“It has been 35 years since the former Franklin High School teacher dared to lead a multiracial occupation of run-down Beacon Hill Elementary School. The peaceful sit-in Oct. 11, 1972, brought 80 black, Native American, white, Asian-Pacific Islander and Latino people to the unheated Seattle Public Schools building to protest cuts to basic education and anti-poverty programs at South Seattle Community College.
Many of those protesters moved on, but their mission not only remains, it also has expanded.”
