“It has helped immigrants from the Sudan, Nicaragua and other countries ravaged by war and natural disaster. Now, local Hispanic groups are pushing to have Peruvians gain the same legal protection in the wake of the country’s devastating earthquake.
A national movement with Passaic County roots has formed in support of extending Temporary Protection Status (TPS) to the tens of thousands of Peruvians living illegally in the United Status. The designation allows immigrants to work, drive legally and avoid deportation but does not grant amnesty or a path to citizenship.”
