“T APPEARS THE City Council soon will consider whether to name a Lubbock street to honor the late Hispanic labor leader Cesar Chavez. As we editorialized on May 6, we think Council members should grant Mr. Chavez that honor but should not accept the suggestion of Canyon Lakes Drive as the roadway to be renamed.

We hope the proponents of naming a street for Mr. Chavez will work with the city on this issue with an attitude of give and take.

Canyon Lakes Drive, which winds along the Canyon Lake system in Lubbock, already is well-named. A better choice would be a street in the Arnett-Benson area of Lubbock, which is predominantly occupied by Hispanic residents.”
