Baylor student group joining national effort to register Hispanics to vote - Texas

“Baylor University’s Hispanic Student Association is joining a nationwide campus effort to register Hispanics students and citizens to vote, more than a year before the 2008 presidential elections.

Tuesday’s event is part of a daylong national effort by the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization. The organization’s goal is to increase voter registration numbers, particularly among Latino youth, who make up the fastest-growing segment of Hispanics in the United States, NCLR officials say.

“We’re just looking to expand the number of Latinos who are involved in the political process,” said Lindsay Daniels, NCLR civic engagement coordinator. “I think there are some opportunities coming out of some disappointing legislation failures, such as immigration reform, that are going to be motivating factors for people to get involved. As a national organization, we see it our responsibility to try to keep that energy high”
