“NPR News journalist Rachel Martin has been recognized with a “Best Radio Religion Reporting” award from the Religion Newswriters Association for her feature on the growing number of young Latino immigrants, mainly women, who are leaving the Catholic Church for the religion of Islam. The report aired on Weekend Edition Sunday on September 24, 2006, and is available at NPR.org.

Martin, who joined NPR in 2005, is the daily newscaster for The Bryant Park Project, the new NPR daily news service that launched on October 1, 2007, and is available on NPR Member stations, online, on mobile devices and Sirius satellite radio. She came to NPR as a foreign correspondent based in Berlin, and has held positions as a religion and a general assignment reporter.

Martin’s report, including interviews with converts and religious experts, explores the reasons Hispanic women are attracted to Islam as well as the challenges they often face after conversion.
