San Antonio offers view of Spanish past and present

With a population of more than a million, the Hispanic capital of Texas is pedestrian friendly. The compact city core winds along the below-street-level River Walk, planted with exotic trees and flowers and lined with restaurants and café terraces; great for people-watching, particularly during fiesta time or the celebrations of Cinco de Mayo and Oktoberfest.
Unlike many U.S. cities, San Antonio is not overwhelmed by high-rise towers; instead, it’s built on a more human scale packed with an impressive number of restored 19th-century and art deco buildings.”
