Smits embracing morally hazy roles

“Actor Jimmy Smits has made a career out of playing men with a strong moral compass, most notably as Detective Bobby Simone on “NYPD Blue” and before that as the young, pro-bono lawyer Victor Sifuentes on “L.A. Law.”

But in two new roles the 52-year-old sheds his good-guy persona: He plays an adulterous husband in the film “The Jane Austen Book Club” which opens Friday and a morally conflicted businessman in the new TV series “Cane.””
