Legal immigrant applications for citizenship up 86% in Southern Arizona

“Over the past 11 months, more than 4,000 immigrants in Pima, Pinal, Cochise, Santa Cruz and Graham counties applied for U.S. citizenship, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data.

That’s nearly double the number from last year.

Some applicants say they want to become U.S. citizens so they can vote in upcoming elections. “
