“Rockford’s Hispanic community speaks out and demands change from the city and police department. They hoped to come up with some solutions on how to curb violence. Tuesday’s meeting follows a similar one held two months ago. But noticeably absent from a meeting about crime were Rockford Police Chief Chet Epperson and Mayor Larry Morrissey. Mary Lou Castro with the League of United Latin American Citizens says, “I think the second meeting was going to be a wake-up call for the City of Rockford and Chief Epperson because we did bring our representation.”
The city sent administrator Julia Scott Valdez, who claimed the mayor and chief’s absences weren’t because they don’t care about the Hispanic community. She says there was a scheduling problem.”
