“Gaeta joined the Felician Franciscan order as a novice in Chicago on Sept. 8, 1951, took her first vows two years later, and made a final commitment to religious life six years later, said Sister Carol Marie Wiatrek, who cared for Gaeta the last years of her life.

Gaeta had been named Carmen by her , but a year after arriving in Chicago she was given the name Mary Grace, according to information from the order.

As a member of the order, she made history by being the first Latina and the first Californian to join the order, Wiatrek said.”
