“”Nearly every artist starts out drawing, usually when they should be doing something else,” writes actor and collector Cheech Marin in the new exhibit, “Papel Chicano” at Mesa Contemporary Arts.

“The ability to draw is the first thing that sets the artist apart from his or her peers.”

It is also the prime virtue of the works on paper that Marin has collected over 20 years. The best work in the show is almost giddy with drawing - the urge to translate what you see into line, shape and color. And not just to make something photographic, but to express something genuine through line, shape and color, used with exuberance and joy. “
