“A day before submitting his resignation at City Hall, Waco Police Chief Alberto Melis made an appearance before a segment of Waco’s population who eagerly welcomed him into the community more than seven years ago.

The catch: This weekend, local Hispanics didn’t know they would soon be bidding farewell to the city’s first Hispanic police chief.

Melis spent Sunday afternoon celebrating Mexican Independence Day with one of Waco’s oldest Hispanic organizations, the Sociedad Mutualista. Some say it was typical of efforts he made throughout his tenure, even during a period when his department was under fire by the local League of United Latin American Citizens chapter.”
