Having turned away from the Republican Party in 2006 largely because of congressional Republicans’ rough handling of legal and illegal immigration policies, U.S.-born and foreign-born Hispanics are saying by even greater margins that they oppose the Iraq war.
From a group that once seemed gettable by Republicans like Ronald Reagan and Bush because of “shared conservative values” such as patriotism, Hispanic anti-Iraq-war sentiment is not about lacking national allegiance, but of a military service history that often stems from contrasting socioeconomic concerns. Many low-income Hispanics and immigrants want to serve, and also see the military as a way station to college or job training. “
